Internet Explorer 8 & Stealth Privacy Mode

Microsoft has confirmed that it will add several new privacy features to its forthcoming Internet Explorer 8 browser that will allow users to cover their digital tracks while surfing the Web.

“Users should be in control of their information. That’s at the core of privacy,” wrote IE 8 program manager Andy Zeigler in a blog post Monday. Ziegler used the post to confirm that IE 8 will include four new privacy features when it ships later this year.

InPrivate Browsing will let users control whether IE 8 saves their browsing history, cookies, and other Internet data. InPrivate Blocking will inform users about sites that can track their browsing history, and will allow them to block such activity. InPrivate Subscriptions will let users choose which Web sites to subscribe to or block.

Windows XP: gone?

You may be upset by the approaching death of Windows XP, but it shouldn’t come as a surprise. Microsoft Corp.’s product life-cycle guidelines have told before the fate of XP since 2001. In fact, Microsoft has been killing off one version of a product as it is replaced with another for years now. But this time around, the approaching demise of XP is getting more attention than, say, the final passing of Windows 2000.
XP is the most widely used operating system on the planet, and its long-delayed successor, Windows Vista, is not proving to be universally popular. The companies that make up the enterprise market for Windows are dragging their feet about upgrading, and on the consumer side there are signs of a rebellion against Vista.

Microsoft clearly took this opportunity to root out crusty programming. In Excel 2008, A lot of other small annoyances seem to have disappeared, too, alongside a modest speed bump on Intel systems. The only disruptive change in 2008 is the removal of a programming language common between the Windows and Mac versions of Office: Visual Basic for Applications (VBA). Among its simpler purposes, VBA was used to write macros that could format documents automatically or insert complicated elements. The use of AppleScript as a replacement isn’t a reasonable transition for power users or those who need it for cross-platform use.
