Mobile Advertising & Google in 2008-2009

Google is definitely looking forward to expand its course of action with mobile advertising after having Android in hand. Here Mashable talks about it like:

While there has been much talk that online advertising will decline in the current/coming recession, the CEO of Google, Eric Schmidt, seems pretty bullish on what will happen with mobile advertising this year.

Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, the Google executive went against the predictions that mobile ads wouldn’t hit $1 billion in revenue until 2012. Reuters reported Schmidt as saying, “It’s the recreation of the Internet, it’s the recreation of the PC story, and it is before us — and it is very likely it will happen in the next year.”

He went on to say that he felt mobile advertising was nearing its tipping point because of features such as location-based advertising. By his theory, it will be situations such as people looking for a nearby restaurant because that will be “a very, very good business.”

Can such searches truly carry an entire industry past the magical $1 billion dollar mark? I’m doubtful, personally. Mobile advertising is going to be a very different beast from online advertising due to the very nature of the screen. On a full-sized computer monitor, I can train my eye to look around and through the ads to the point I hardly even register they exist any more. The problem on a mobile phone is its limited size. Everyone seems to think this supposed new ad boom is going to be some sort of wonderful new revenue stream. All I see it doing is annoying me thoroughly.

Is Google Chrome Lively?

Google Chrome is not lively says TechCrunch:

Here’s what they said:
First up is Google Analytics, which doesn’t track Chrome usage separately from Firefox (why Firefox?) for now, even though other services made the change immediately. Since Chrome is a two-year project and shouldn’t have been a surprise to anyone at Google, the cynic in me thinks they will wait until they have a few points of market share:

Q. Will I see Google Chrome listed as a browser in my Google Analytics reports?
A. Because Google Chrome was not launched externally until today, we haven’t yet changed Google Analytics to recognize it when you segment by browser within reports. However - this will change in the coming weeks (until then, the browser will show as Firefox). We’ll let you know when the change happens.

Internet Explorer 8 & Stealth Privacy Mode

Microsoft has confirmed that it will add several new privacy features to its forthcoming Internet Explorer 8 browser that will allow users to cover their digital tracks while surfing the Web.

“Users should be in control of their information. That’s at the core of privacy,” wrote IE 8 program manager Andy Zeigler in a blog post Monday. Ziegler used the post to confirm that IE 8 will include four new privacy features when it ships later this year.

InPrivate Browsing will let users control whether IE 8 saves their browsing history, cookies, and other Internet data. InPrivate Blocking will inform users about sites that can track their browsing history, and will allow them to block such activity. InPrivate Subscriptions will let users choose which Web sites to subscribe to or block.

Space Station Laptops Infected By Malware

Malware has managed to get off the planet and onto the International Space Station (ISS), NASA confirmed today. And it’s not the first time that a worm or virus has stowed away on a trip into orbit.

The attack code, which space news site SpaceRef.com identified Monday as “W32.Gammima.AG,” infected at least one of the laptops used on the station, an international effort headlined by the U.S. and Russia.

National Aeronautics and Space Administration spokesman Kelly Humphries declined to identify the malware, saying only that antivirus software detected a worm on July 25.

Google AdSense Stops Displaying on Google Cache Results?

A WebmasterWorld thread reports that many publishers have started to notice that their Google AdSense ads are not showing up when someone accesses their pages via the Google cache.

For example, a recent Google cache copy of my personal blog does not show the AdSense ad at the top right of my blog. It simply does not render on the page. Typically, it would show to the right of the linkedin logo.

Some theories are that it is related to the Allowed Sites AdSense feature, but I don’t use that for my personal blog. Others just think it is a temporary Google bug. Time will tell.

Hacking Is Not A Crime: Especially When University Teaches It!

University students are to be taught the art of computer hacking, it has been announced.

The MSc ethical hacking and computer security course will give postgraduate students “detailed knowledge of electronic attacks”.

The University of Abertay, in Dundee, says its course will teach participants to identify vulnerabilities in computer systems and come up with methods to protect them. It is the first course of its type in the UK.

By becoming “ethical hackers”, the course’s graduates are in a position to work for computer companies and other large firms to protect networks.

It is predicted graduates could be earning up to £60,000 annually within a couple of years of completing the course.

Professor Lachlan MacKinnon, head of the school of computing and creative technologies, said years of “complacency and ignorance” in the industry meant there was a lack of security experts. He said: “There’s an enormous shortage of people with relevant skills to work on the security side of this industry.

Wireless technology set to progress

It is hoped that the Wireless technology will be helpful to prevent car collisions and provide health monitoring in the upcoming  years  according to research.

Cars will be  built with sensors that automatically detect  emergency services after a crash, or prevent collisions by alerting vehicles of sudden braking, while handheld scanners could check food barcodes for allergy information, Ofcom’s Tomorrow’s Wireless World report said.

The  wireless technology  is growing with the upcoming needs of people and the electronics and is hoped to be  adapted in the  next 10 to 20 years. The research about wireless communication is  now “integral to our lives”, with mobile subscriptions outnumbering the total UK population by 10 million.

The researchers are said to prepare this type of technology  for future demands on the UK’s radio frequencies, or spectrum, that wireless services use.
