Forget your iPhones, Blackberries or N95’s. Cellphones from China are going to be the leading innovators in the mobile phone industry for 2008.
According to market research company, Global Sources, China’s total production of mobile phones in 2007 was about 450 million units, 45 percent of the total global output.
And with new, less stringent, registration regulations for new mobile phone companies, market analysts expect the number of manufacturers of wholesale mobiles in China to skyrocket in 2008.
Bigger-name players like ZTE Lenovo and Huawei Technologies beginning to build brand name overseas face competitors from new players in market.
According to Chinavasion PR manager, Rose Li, growth in this market has been immense with dozens of companies opening up in the last few months alone.
“The growth in this industry in China is really a double-edged sword because cellphones in China can’t compete on price like they used to so have to find other ways to differentiate themselves from competitors,” said Rose Li.
The higher cost of raw materials and oil, and rampant inflation in China has prevented companies from competing with price, according to Global sources, forcing wholesale mobile phone makers to focus on features.

At the pace technology is moving, it can get pretty scary at times, especially when you know scientists are now working on a machine that is capable of figuring out a human’s intention before it results in action. Apparently our brain’s prefrontal cortex region is activated whenever we are about to make a decision. All I know about the prefrontal cortex region, I learnt from Brain Age on my DS. A successful implementation will definitely see this device being made available in courtrooms and interrogation chambers. Will there be a new set of laws drafted to prosecute a person who has the intention of commiting a crime but does not follow through? Interesting times are definitely lined up ahead of us.

In the future, it could get wrapped around a lamppost or a person’s wrist, even worn as clothing. Perhaps it can be put up like wallpaper

THERE’S no reason to travel these days without a digital camera, especially as you can fit some amazingly powerful ones inside your pocket. Samsung’s tiny and featherweight NV100 ($599) fits in your palm but boasts features usually found only on much more bulky ‘pro-sumer’ cameras. You get a resolution of 14.7 megapixels, which means you can take scenic shots, crop out a small portion of your picture to use, and still be left with enough visual quality to print out 4R-sized photos.
Although the NV100 functions well as a point-and-shoot camera, with snappy response and effective image stabilisation to make up for shaky hands, those who are inclined to tinker can use the camera’s intuitive touchscreen interface to adjust settings. The NV100’s automatic mode tends to over-expose pictures both with and without flash, so you might have to work a bit in tricky lighting, such as the top of a scenic hill at dusk.
